Who am I - Thomas Schleuter, the founder of Tommywood

Hello, I'm Tommywood (Thomas Schleuter), 41 years old, married to my wife Julia and father of 4 children. We live with our blended family in Erkelenz and are passionate wood craftsmen. Thank you for your interest in our handcrafted wooden mud kitchens!

Our Story: From the first mud kitchen to a family business

In 2020, we moved into our shared house with a small garden. The desire for a mud kitchen for our children quickly arose. Since our budget was tight after the move, I cobbled together our first outdoor children's kitchen from scraps and pallets after work.

The first highlight in the garden was created! The children loved their new mud kitchen, but the susceptible materials quickly no longer looked good. My wife convinced me: "We need a new, durable kitchen!"

The Breakthrough: Quality over Quantity

Instead of buying a mud kitchen, I decided to build one according to our ideas. The first Tommywood mud kitchen was born - robust, weatherproof, and made from high-quality wood.

From the Garage to a Family Business

Friends and neighbors were thrilled! In the summer of 2021, we put our first handcrafted mud kitchen online on classifieds. The response was overwhelming - one inquiry after another!

The decision was made: I quit my job and took the plunge into self-employment. Our garage became a workshop, the living room a packing station. A wonderful, creative chaos!

Growth and Challenges

The space quickly became too small. We moved into our first hall, then into a larger workshop. At times, we employed up to 6 people. But the war in Ukraine brought uncertainty - we had to downsize and are now working as a family business again.

My motivation from the start was to develop a mud kitchen for children that convinces with durability and robustness. It was annoying to always buy toys that break too quickly.
